We will explore the greatness of chanting Sahasranāma as mentioned in Sri Hari Bhakti Vilāsaḥ composed by Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa Goswāmi. It is part of ṣaṣṭha-vilāsaḥ of Hari Bhakti Vilāsaḥ we will include the original verses and english translation of the same based on the translation of Śrī Haridāsa Śāstrī jī edition.
Sahasranāma here refers to Viṣṇu Sahasranāma of Mahābhārata. There are many thousand names of Bhagavān that are found in different texts. Other Sahasranāmas which are used by Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas is Gopal Sahasranāma of Sammohan Tantra and Sahasranāma of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu composed by different Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava Ācāryas.
atha sahasra-nāma-māhātmyam
तत्रैव—
स्नानकाले तु देवस्य पठेन्नामसहस्रकम् ।
प्रत्यक्सरं लभेत्पुण्यं कपिलागोशतोद्भवम् ॥१९०॥
It is mentioned in the Dvārakā Mahatmayam that if one chants sahasranāma while bathing the deity of Kṛṣṇa he gets result of donating Kapila cows at every word he chants.
विष्णुधर्मोत्तरे—
कृत्वा नामसहस्रेण स्तुतिं तस्य महात्मनः ।
वियोगमाप्नोति नरः सर्वानर्थैर्न संशयः ॥१९१॥
Viṣṇu-Dharmottara Purāṇa states that –
By offering prayers to Lord Hari who is addressed as mahātmanaḥ using sahasranāma one gets freedom from all kinds of anartha and there is no doubt about it.
स्कान्दे श्रीब्रह्मनारदसंवादे—
विष्णोर्नामसहस्रं तु पूजाकाले पठन्ति ये ।
वेदानां चैव पुण्यानां फलमाप्नोति मानवः ॥१९२॥
श्लोकेनैकेन देवर्षे सहस्रनामकस्य यत् ।
पठितेन फलं प्रोक्तं न तत्क्रतुशतैरपि ॥१९३॥
मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं यत्कृतं पूजनं हरेः ।
परिपूर्णं भवेत्सर्वं सहस्रनामकीर्तनात् ॥१९४॥
It is mentioned in Skanda Purāṇa that Brahmā told to Nārada that –
One who chants Viṣṇu sahasranāma while worshiping Lord Hari gets the results of chanting all the Vedas.
O Devarsi , Just by chanting one sloka of sahasranāma one gets the result that one cannot even get by performing hundred yagnas.
The worship of Hari, which is devoid of mantra and devoid of ritual, becomes complete by reciting the sahasranāma.
किं च—
ज्ञानाज्ञानकृतं पापं पठित्वा विष्णुसन्निधौ ।
नाम्नां सहस्रं विष्णोस्तु प्रजहाति महारुजम् ॥१९५॥
ब्रह्महत्यादि पापानि कामचारकृतान्यपि ।
विलयं यान्ति वै नूनमन्यपापे तु का कथा ॥१९६॥
सिद्ध्यन्ति सर्वकार्याणि मनसा चिन्तितानि च ।
यः पठेत्प्रातरुत्थाय विष्णोर्नामसहस्रकम् ॥१९७॥
Further it state that –
By reciting the Viṣṇu sahasranāma in presence of deity of Lord Hari, one gets rid of the great diseases and sins committed intentionally and unintentionally.
Even sins like the murder of a brahmin, committed out of lust, are certainly destroyed, so what to say of other sins?
One who chants Viṣṇu sahasranāma in morning accomplishes all those tasks that he thinks in his mind.
( This the greatness of sahasranāma but one should not chant sahasranāma for getting rid of sins as this is one one of the nāmāparādhas that considering the chanting of names of Lord as equivalent to some frutive activities (Karma-kāṇḍa) or committing sins on the strength of the holy name.)
तत्रैव श्रीकृष्णार्जुनसंवादे—
अधीतास्तेन वै वेदाः सुराः सर्वसमर्चिताः ।
नाम्नां सहस्रं योऽधीते मुक्तिस् तस्य करे स्थिता ॥१९८॥
कुर्वत्पापसहस्राणि भुञ्जानोऽपि यतस्ततः ।
पठेन्नामसहस्रस्तु दुर्गन्धं न स पश्यति ॥१९९॥
मुक्त्वा नामसहस्रस्तु नान्यो धर्मोऽस्ति कश्चन ।
कलौ प्राप्ते गुडाकेश सत्यमेतन्मयेरितम् ॥२००॥
यज्ञैर्दानैस्तपभिश्च स्तवैः प्रीतिर्न मेऽर्जुन ।
सन्तुष्टिस्तु न चान्येन विना नामसहस्रकम् ॥२०१॥
स्तवं नामसहस्राख्यं ये न जानन्ति वै कलौ ।
भ्रमन्ति ते नरा लोके सर्वधर्मबहिष्कृताः ॥२०२॥
स्तवं नामसहस्राख्यं लिखितं यस्य वेश्मनि ।
पूज्यते मम सान्निध्ये पूजां गृह्णामि तस्य वै ॥२०३॥
It is mentioned in the Kṛṣṇārjuna-Saṁvād of Skanda Purāṇa that. –
One who chants sahasranāma has completed the study of vedas and has worshipped all gods and he has liberation in his hands.
One who has committed thousand sins and eat here and there does not see the door of hell if he chants sahasranāma.
O GuḍakeŚa, this is the truth that I have spoken. In Kali age there is no requirement for other religious activities just chant sahasranāma.
O Arjuna, I am not pleased by sacrifices, gifts, austerities, and praises bereft of chanting of sahasranāma.
Those who do not know the hymn called sahasranāma in this age of Kali,wander in the world, excluded from all religious duties.
I accept the worship of him in whose house this hymn called the sahasranāma is present in written form, and who worships it in my presence.
यस्मिन्नामसहस्रं मे गृहे तिष्ठति सर्वदा । लिखितं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ तत्र नो विशते कलिः ॥२०४॥
तस्मात्त्वमपि कौन्तेय मद्भक्तो मन्मना भव ।
पठन्नामसहस्रं मे सर्वान्कामानवाप्स्यसि ॥२०५॥
अहमाराधितः पूर्वं ब्रह्मणा लोककर्तृणा ।
ततो नामसहस्रं मे प्राप्तं लोकहितं परम् ॥२०६॥
नारदेन ततः पूर्वं प्राप्तं च परमेष्ठिनः ।
नारदेन ततः प्रोक्तवृषीणामूर्ध्वरेतसाम् ॥२०७॥
ऋषिभिस्तु महाबाहो देवलोके प्रकाशितम् ।
मर्त्यलोके मनुष्याणां व्यासेन परिभाषितम् ॥२०८॥
तपसोग्रेण महता शङ्करेण महात्मना । मत्प्रसादादनुप्राप्तं गुह्यानामुत्तमोत्तमम् ॥२०९॥
दत्तं भवान्यै रुद्रेण नाम्नां मे हि सहस्रकम् ।
विश्रुतं त्रिषु लोकेषु मया ते परिकीर्तितम् ॥२१०॥
O best of the Pandavas, In the house where the Sahasranāma are always present, there the effects of Kaliyug does not enter.
Therefore, O son of Kunti, be a devotee of Mine, and recite Sahasranāma by dedicating your mind to me, you will attain all your desires.
Brahmā, the creator of the world by worshipping me in the past received from me the Sahasranāma, which are for the supreme benefit of the world.
Then Nārada received it from the me. Then Nārada spoke this sahasranāma to the ūrdhvaretas sages.
O mighty-armed one, it was revealed in the devalok by the sages. In the martya-lok, it was explained by Vyāsa for the benefit of all.
The great soul Śaṅkara, through great and severe austerities, obtained this most excellent of secrets by my grace.
Rudra gave these sahasranāma to Bhavani through this process my sahasranāma became well-known in the three worlds.
( So here we can see the how sahasranāma of Bhagavān was spread throughout the three worlds. We can also see the lineage of these sahasranāma that from Bhagavān Both Brahmā and Nārada recieved these names and then Narada gave them to Vyāsa who compiled these names in his works like Mahābhārata and through that we have received them that is why rishi of Viṣṇu Sahasranāma is Vyāsa.)
अशेषार्तिहरं पार्थ मम नामसहस्रकम् ।
सद्यः प्रीतिकरं पुण्यं सुराणाममृतं यथा ॥२११॥
अष्टादशपुराणानां सारेमेतद्धनञ्जय ।
मयोद्धृत्य समाख्यातं तव नामसहस्रकम् ॥२१२॥
सहस्रनाममाहात्म्यं देवो जानाति शङ्करः ।
सहस्रनाममाहात्म्यं यः पठेच्छृणुयादपि ।
अपराधसहस्रेण न स लिप्येत्कदाचन ॥२१३॥
O Partha, Just like nectar is for gods my sahasranāma is for humans as it removes all suffering and immediately pleases me and is very auspicious.
O Dhanañjaya, this is the essence of the eighteen Puranas.I have extracted it and told you my sahasranāma.
The Lord Śiva knows the greatness of the sahasranāma. He who recites or listens to the greatness of the sahasranāma, will never be tainted by thousands of offenses.
Conclusion
We can conclude that on the basis of above evidences that chanting Sahasranāma is beneficial for both spiritual and material progress in this age of Kali. Śrīpāda Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa has composed a commentary on Viṣṇu Sahasranāma named Nāmārtha-sudhā based on Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava teachings. It is recommended to study that to get more benefit of chanting Sahasranāma. Ultimate benefit of chanting holy names of lord is getting love for Bhagavān which is ultimate goal of human life.
